UMBC’s Modern Men

Two UMBC alums were featured in “BE Modern Man,” a program that honors the accomplishments, challenges, and victories men of color have endured all while making a positive impact on the world. We are proud to share the extraordinary work of Dr. DeLeon Gray ‘07, interdisciplinary studies and Dr. Nnadozie Onunkwo ‘06, computer engineering.

DeLeonGrayDr. DeLeon Gray ’07, interdisciplinary studies is a professor at North Carolina State University. He is passionate about giving back to the community and is especially interested in investing his own time and talents back into the African American community as he understands his own personal responsibility to continually make improvements. Dr. Gray has created SMART Collaborative, a program that is centered around the coming together of educators and researchers who want to improve the education challenges facing society today.


Dr.DozieOnonkwoDr. Nnadozie Onunkwo ’06, computer engineering learned the importance of living a healthy lifestyle and understood that becoming educated in health and fitness issues was also important win the fight against obesity. He created a website, www.unbiasedhealth.com, to organize current scientific information regarding relating to health and fitness in an easily accessible medium. He also understood that in order to combat these issues awareness need to be spread amongst the youngest members of society. Through his clothing line, Dr. Onunkwo uses sports to build that relationship with the youth to empower them academically and athletically.
