Congratulations to the UMBC men’s cross country team on winning their first America East championship since 2005! From the news release: Following a third place finish at last year’s America East Championships, the UMBC men’s cross country team wanted more. A year later, the Retrievers got it, winning the league title Saturday morning at Binghamton University.

During John Goedeke’s first year on the UMBC basketball team, the players lost all but five games. The year was 1975, and all of the players were freshmen and sophomores. “UMBC wasn’t even ten years old, but it was a challenge and an opportunity, and I welcomed that,” said Goedeke ’79, economics, who had turned down recruiters from big name basketball schools like Ohio State and the University of Maryland, College Park, for a spot on a fledgling team with coaches he really admired. Two of a Kind: Robert Cartwright '80 and Ryan Cartwright '06

Not surprisingly, Robert Cartwright ’80 felt a bit of déjà vu watching his son, Ryan, cross the finish line at the America East Conference Championship in Binghamton, NY, last month.
